About the Art
The octopus holds a small bowl. Tentacles relaxed, expression unreadable, entirely at ease inside what appears to be a ceramic pot. The 歓 and 迎 characters flanking the image are traditional symbols of welcome and greeting. Whoever ran this establishment, likely a seafood izakaya given the imagery, had a very clear idea of the kind of place they were running.
Red on black, outlined in cream. The design sits somewhere between charming and unsettling in the way the best Japanese folk illustration tends to. Warm enough to invite you in. Strange enough to stay with you. It is not trying to be anything other than what it is, which is exactly why it works.
Most matchbox labels from this period were designed to be struck and thrown away. This one was designed to be remembered.
A bold retro Japanese wall art print restored from an original archival label, woodblock texture and ink variation preserved throughout. Ideal for a kitchen or dining room that doesn't need to explain itself, and one of the most striking vintage Japanese prints in the collection.
